What are Parabens? And why should I care if they are in my products?

Hmmm...What are parabens? I found myself asking this particular question when I finally started reading the labels on cosmetics and realized that there are different types of parabens and that they come in just about every comestic product...seriously! Oh, and you can even find butylPARABEN in your Buckley's cough syrup, ewh!!

Parabens are a kind of chemical that are most commonly used as a preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Why should you care about parabens? Well parabens are known as "estrogen mimickers" and have been found in breast cancer tissues and may also interfere with male reproductive functions. By all means AVOID the paraben family, especially propyl-and butylparabens!! The rest of the world should be like Denmark and BAN the most heineous of parabens!!

So, what are you waiting for to go PARABEN FREE??? Next time you are thinking about purchasing a new lispstick, shampoo, body wash, body cream,foundation...ANYTHING, choose PARABEN FREE.

And if your favorite brand doesn't carry Paraben free..TWEET them and get your online community involved in the conversation so the brand can hear you and take note.

Do you own any Paraben Free product? If so, what is it?

  1. Parabens are still one of the most stable preservatives on the market. As a consumer it's important to actually research what you're talking about - consumers are the reasons parabens have been banned. That study completed in the 90s had no conclusive evidence linked to breast cancer, and they still haven't come to a conclusion on the topic - you might want to first talk to Clinique who uses even WORSE preservatives in their products.

  4. i was reading about this too and trying to figure out what all the hoo-hah surrouding them is. though evidence is still inconclusive, (correlation/causation and all that) i guess its just a safer bet in general to try and avoid them. i would esp try and do it for deoderant but i'm having a hard time finding one that still works w/o all the bad stuff in it

  5. As much as I can, I also stay away from parabens! Since I learned what they do to the body, I got freaked out and resorted to finding parabens-free alternatives :D I use sooo much parabens free products, but at the top of my head, I'm using Nutox Oxyfusion skincare :D

  20. honestly, 99 percent of make-up out there (especially the major and good ones) contain paraben..it is something that I cannot avoid even if I want to. But with skincare, more companies are changing their formulas and obviously paraben family is not invited lol. This is what I have been focusing on...skincare, haircare, bodycare, etc cause they actually go in my system not just skindeep. But interestingly enough, with all the hype that is being going on lately about the danger of these types of preservative, Paula Begoun wrote something OPPOSITE...you should read it just as additional reference maybe :)

  21. I honestly haven't looked too much into parabens although I do find it a huge benefit a product is paraben free! It's hard to get rid of your holy grails and start from scratch again though... :(

  22. I tried to avoid paraben-free products if i can. Eg: most natural and organic product. But as a beauty blogger, that's something we couldn't avoid. Imagine those cosmetics, lipstick and stuff with parabens. sigh.

  23. A lot of my beauty products, makeup especially, have parabens and even if I recognize that they're not good, I can't completely avoid them since so many makeup brands have them in their products. My skin is also very picky in that even when I try to use all-natural products, they have little to no effect on my skin so I have to continue using stuff even if they have parabens in them. I guess I'll just try to avoid it as much as possible!

  25. I use Burt's Bees lip shimmer as a lipstick, but the rest of the products it's hard as they don't really say what's in them.
